General Info

If you’re craving something bold and comforting, Grandma Liu Hot Pot is one of those places that instantly pulls you in with its rich flavors and casual, welcoming vibe. Tucked into a convenient Richmond location, this Chinese restaurant has become a go-to spot for dinner, especially when you’re in the mood for something warm, spicy, and deeply satisfying.

The first thing that stands out on the menu is their signature spicy hot pot, known as 刘姥姥砂锅麻辣烫. It arrives bubbling in a clay pot, releasing a fragrant, numbing aroma that hints at layers of Sichuan peppercorn and chili. The broth is intense but balanced, and every ingredient-from tender meats to fresh vegetables-soaks up that flavor beautifully. It’s the kind of dish that feels both indulgent and comforting, especially on cooler evenings or when you just want a hearty meal.

What makes the experience even better is how approachable everything feels. Whether you’re dining solo or coming in for a relaxed dinner, the atmosphere is easygoing and stress-free. The service is straightforward, and the setup makes it simple to focus on the food. If you’re short on time, takeout is a solid option, and the flavors hold up surprisingly well even after the trip home.

Another detail that adds to the convenience is the range of payment options, including NFC mobile payments, which makes the checkout process quick and modern. Plus, having access to a free parking lot nearby removes one of the usual hassles of dining out in busy areas like Richmond.

From a reviewer’s perspective, what really sticks is the consistency. The menu is focused, the flavors are bold, and the overall experience feels reliable. It’s not trying to be overly fancy-instead, it leans into what it does best: delivering authentic, flavorful hot pot in a relaxed setting.

If you’ve been browsing reviews or exploring different dining spots in the area, this location stands out for its signature dish alone. The combination of convenience, strong flavors, and a comfortable dining setup makes it an easy recommendation for anyone looking to enjoy a satisfying Chinese hot pot experience.

What customers say?

“ I absolutely love the design of the tableware; it effectively keeps the food warm throughout the dining experience. The flavor of the soup base is delightful, and they even provided a complimentary Coke for diners. I will definitely be returning! ”

“ Food is fresh and soup base is tasty. The only down side is the price. It seems pretty cheap per 100g, but it adds up quickly. My photo below shows you what $40 can get you. It was a bit too much for me tho (I have a big appetite)... be smart and don't grab frozen things that adds extra weight when you eat here. ”

- Alan Hu -

“ Not much service, pretty much self serve dining experience. Malatang is absolutely amazing, not too spicy, ingredients are fresh. A nice place to have some comfort food. ”

- Henry Chen -

“ The food was very fresh and tasty, the broth tasted a bit like peanut butter, i wish they would have told me before, i don’t have allergies but is courtesy. It looks rustic and simple and prices are ok to be richmond ”

“ From my experience, I would provide 5 stars however not everyone will have the same experience since the server (although very friendly and courteous) cannot communicate in English. Mandarin is no problem. Good thing my Mandarin is sufficient so I had a good time. The soup is great as it is rich in taste and savoury and you can choose the level of spiciness and numbness but you will need to communicate it which again will be hard if you do not speak Mandarin. Ingredients are fresh and they keep restocking. I'll explain a little how it works here. Everything at the ingredients counter is $2.99 per 100g so if you choose items that are hydrated in water or frozen you will be paying for the absorbed water as well. You may have individual bowls or shared. They only have one soup base and they don't extra charge for individual ceramic bowls. The scale starts at negative weight to offset the container weight. The spices (sesame paste, pepper oil (numbing level), chili oil (spicy level) and garlic are included and you can request to have as much as you want. Rice is $1.50 per bowl per person and unlimited refills for now. You may add an egg for a dollar. ”

“ A Unique & Flavorful Hot Pot Experience – Just Know the Rules! Grandma Liu Hot Pot is a fantastic find for those who love a personalized dining adventure! Before you go, here’s the lowdown so there are no surprises: How It Works: · Everything from the ingredients counter is $3.99 per 100g. A quick tip: ingredients like frozen tofu or water-soaked veggies will weigh more due to water absorption, so choose mindfully! · The scale is tared to account for your bowl’s weight—nice and fair. · Spices like sesame paste, numbing pepper oil, spicy chili oil, and garlic are included, and you can ask for as much as you want. · Rice is $2 per person with unlimited refills (for now!). · They offer only one soup base, and you can have individual ceramic pots at no extra charge. The Experience: You pick your ingredients, choose your preferred spice level, and they cook it all up in that fragrant, simmering broth. We loved customizing our bowls and watching everything come together. The result? A deeply flavorful, comforting stew where every ingredient soaks up the rich, aromatic broth. The food was delicious, well-cooked, and deeply satisfying. If you enjoy hands-on meals with bold flavors, this is your spot. We’ll definitely be back! ”

“ Updated September 2024: I feel like they have gotten even better with the quality of the ingredients, the start of rewards points for their location, and free coke / person. The only downside is that because they only got 5-6 tables at a time, you may have to wait for quite some time when you hit the rush hour. You should only come here with a group of 4 or less. Original Post: Great choice of fresh vegetables & meat of your choice, with flavorful broth with the option of chili oil, peanut sauce, garlic, and additional fee for a bowl of rice. Even just having the malatang without the rice is already quite filling. Be careful how much you put in the bowl, as it can get quite expensive when you are putting stuff in without realizing how much you got. As there arent too many tables, strongly recommend this place on a rainy, chilli day with a group of 4 people or less! ”

“ We actually really like eating here. Love the soup base and enjoying picking out our own stuff. We usually get 1 soup and load up with stuff we want. Staff friendly and the facilities are clean. I would recommend eating here! And we will be back! ”
